Nevada run-flat test video
CloseOverview
The RV (recreational vehicle) market in the USA is the world’s largest.
According to statistics published by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), almost 4,000 motorhomes (Type A, B and C) are shipped each month in the USA. When towable vehicles are included, the number is closer to 40,000 per month. In 2014, the North American recreational vehicles market stood at 345,000 units.
Statistics published by Globe Newswire on May 31, 2016, predicted a CAGR of 4.1% between 2014-2020. The industry, which was valued at USD 16 billion in 2014, is expected to reach USD 20.24 billion by 2020. The RV parks and campgrounds sector is valued at $5bn p.a.
One of the biggest risks in driving an RV can be a tyre blowout. In 21% of cases, this results in a rollover of the vehicle. View video example of a RV blowout and overturn.
Digital Tsunami was commissioned to produce a video to document the testing of a run-flat tyre. The objective was to convey the manufacturing capability, ISO 9001 certified processes, testing to international standards, and the quality of materials.
At a desert test track in western USA, a large RV and a SUV simulated blow outs by the proscribed method of explosives attached to the tyre. At 60 km/h, the tyre ruptured and shredded rapidly.
With a ‘run-flat’ solid rubber insert fitted tightly to the inner wheel rim, the vehicles were able to drive without damaging the rim and with the driver in total control. This allows the vehicle to be steered and slowed to the side of the road without swerving into traffic or leaving the road and overturning.
To achieve this objective, Andrew W Morse first determined to deliver the video in 4K resolution*. The visual concept and shooting schedule were prepared, approved and logistics to the remote Nevada test-track arranged.
A photographer, aerial camera operator and experienced local videographer (with whom the director had previously worked) were contracted. Due to advance planning and four 4K cameras on the side of the road and in & on the vehicles, broad coverage was achieved with just two trial runs and ‘blow-out’ tests.
Back in Australia, a music track with an appropriately high tempo was selected and the footage edited into a tight, powerful video.
*Digital Tsunami has been exclusively shooting 4K since 2014 and the company’s founder has been shooting film and video since 1979!
