How many times have you visited sites where you felt like you've just stumbled across a secret clubhouse adorned with symbols that only have meaning to the members?
It's not that the in-house or hired designers and developers try to hide what the site has to offer, they (or their supervisors) are just too close to the project to realize that their knowledge of their company or product is not our knowledge. And if you're convinced everyone already knows about your particular niche, then get help. Have your Mom or your neighbor to look at your home page. Does she get it? Does she understand (in under a minute) what your company or website does, with no explanation from you?
This may seem obvious to some, but the best people to judge your web site is no one in your company or industry. Get a friend (not in the business) that can look at it with fresh eyes and watch what she does, see what she sees. This is what usability expert and author Steve Krug
calls a "Lost-Our-Lease Usability Test". And believe it or not, it works so well it will surprise even the most hardened supervisor. And if used regularly, can be an invaluable part of your design process. Just do this as much as you can before you launch your website. You'll be very glad you did.Recommend this article... |
